Many analysts believe that a bull market is an extended period–can be over months, or even years–in which a stock market index sees extended gains; for this reason, the bull can be considered by many as synonymous with investor optimism, a growing economy and consumer confidence. A bear market, however, is greeted with pessimism because it occurs when indexes fall from a recent high.
