The Mint is hiring a Product Engineer who can thrive in a dynamic and inclusive environment.
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Minting Engineering Division, the Product Engineer is accountable to oversee a portfolio of products (coins, related tooling, and packaging) and related minting processes. The role involves leading both the development phase of the products and related manufacturing processes based on Product Marketing requirements and overseeing production and packaging activities to ensure successful product delivery and stable manufacturing processes within the established timeframe. The incumbent also provides technical insight, Bill of Materials (BOM), and product costing with a goal of maximizing product profitability and supporting commercial success. The Product Engineer must work collaboratively with different business areas and external vendors to meet product launch deadlines.
Upon hiring as a Product Engineer on a permanent position, the successful incumbent will be assigned to an 18-month term to support the implementation of a new ERP system, with a focus of product-related processes - product master data, Bills of Materials (BOMs), routings and product costing.
Your Responsibilities:
- Responsible for ensuring that assigned portfolio products (coin, embellishments, packaging, etc.) are ready in time for launch
- Lead the product development activities, related tooling requirements and production, and the minting production process in order to meet business case assumptions and key milestones
- Develop tooling specifications and process specifications for the assigned products. Develop corrective action plans for products deviating from baseline business case costing. Ensure corrective actions are documented and communicated for future reference
- Develop detailed product costing to meet both Product requirements and production profitability which feeds into the business case assumptions for production and marketing
- Participate in problem analysis and solution recommendation; hands-on approach is a requirement
- Provide hands-on skills to complete projects related to precious metal casting, processing and material handling
- Proactively support all departments (Quality, Process Engineering, Production, Packaging, etc.) and provide technical assistance relating to respective coin products and production
- Participate in problem analysis and solution recommendation; hands-on approach is an asset
- Lead and participate in continuous improvement projects relating to processes, materials, machinery and technology
- Participate in the review of Environmental and Health and Safety requirements relating to the manufacturing process
This opening is to be filled on a hybrid working arrangement, and the incumbent will be required to work from the Winnipeg location generally on an average of 3-4 days per week which could change based on operational requirements.

Qualifications:
Languages
- English proficiency is essential
Education & Designation
- University degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial, or Metallurgical Engineering
- Professional Engineer Designation or Engineering Intern
Experience
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment
- Experience with ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics) for managing BOMs and production processes
- Possess thorough knowledge of general principles and theories in chemical, mechanical or metallurgical engineering and can contribute significantly to applying solutions to manufacturing issues
- Work cross-functionally with Production/Operations, Quality, Sales and Marketing, and technical teams
Additional Qualifications
- Proven project management skills are an asset
- Proven experience in new product introduction (NPI) and project costing/quotations in a manufacturing setting
- Able to collaborate with other team members, with the ability to influence and persuade others while also being open to receiving suggestions and feedback
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and data accuracy.
- Knowledge and experience using six sigma is an asset
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Aptitude and ability to understand complex materials and mechanical design problems, equipment and processes; manufacturing process experience is an asset
- Technical knowledge and experience in metallic materials and metal processing, metal forming, and metal finishing is an asset
- Working knowledge of industrial automation, PLC Programming and CNC programming would be considered an asset
- Solution-oriented: Proactively seeks to put forth creative solutions when faced with challenges to technical problems, production, budget and timing of deliverables.
- This is a position in which you will be required to work from the Winnipeg location with some travel to the Ottawa location on occasion
